Reiki Lineage

Usui Mikao-Sensei* (1865-1926)

Usui-Sensei,*, the founder of Reiki Ryoho (healing art), attained spiritual enlightenment in 1922 at the age of 57 while he was fasting and meditating on Mt, Kurama in Kyoto, the ancient capital city of Japan. At the same time he attained this enlightenment, he realized that he also received a miraculous healing ability. Usui-Sensei thought that this wonderful gift of healing ability should be shared with everyone and not just kept to himself and/or his family. As a result, he opened up “Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai**” at Aoyama,Tokyo in 1922 and began teaching.

In Western countries, it's been incorrectly said that Reiki healing method or formula was rediscovered by Usui Sensei after research into Buddhist scriptures or that it is of ancient Tibetan origins. Reiki is a wholly Japanese method to channel the energy of the universe and is an inspired healing art of Usui Sensei, not the outcome of his researches, or discovery, or re-discovery.

(Please note that in the West, Usui-sensei’s name would be pronounced Mikao Usui. Usui is the family or last name. Mikao is his given or first name. Since the family name has more importance in Japanese culture, it is said first.)

 Hayashi Chujiro  (1879-1940)

Dr. Chujiro Hayashi Sensei
Hayashi Chujiro-Sensei was a captain in the Imperial Navy of Japan. He was initiated into Shinpiden (Teacher’s Degree) by Usui-Sensei in 1925 after his retirement from the Navy. He opened his Reiki clinic at Higashi-shinano-cho, Tokyo. He was one of the directors of Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai. In 1931 he left the Gakkai and set up “Hayashi Reiki Kenkyu Kai”. He trained 13 Shihans (Teachers), two of them women, namely his wife, Mrs. Hayashi Chie, and Mrs.  Takata Hawayo. His wife, Mrs. Hayashi Chie, was also a member of Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai.

In 1937 Hayashi sensei traveled to Hawaii with his daughter. He stayed for several months, hosted by  Mrs. Takata. Before he left Hawaii in February of 1938, he awarded Mrs. Takata a Shihan (teachers) certificate.  He died on May 11, 1940

(Note: In the West it is said that Hayashi-sensei was a medical doctor. This  cannot be confirmed as there are no records to verify this fact.)

Yamaguchi Chiyoko (1921-2003)

Among  Hayashi's students was a young woman named Yamaguchi Chiyoko. Mrs. Yamaguchi did not learn anything about Usui-Sensei or the history of Reiki and did not become a Shihan, but was taught how to give Reiju (attunements) by her uncle, another of Hayashi's students.

She did not open a public Reiki practice, but instead practiced privately with her family and friends. Due to the many requests of various people, she began teaching Reiki to others in 1996. She had no set curriculum, and did not provide any written materials or certificates. She made no clear distinction between levels, and no specific class was taught to designate her students as such. She simply taught as she went along.

One of Mrs. Yamagushi's students, was a Buddhist monk named, Inamoto Hyakuten.

Takata Hawayo (1900-1980)

Mrs. Hawayo Takata, a Japanese American born in Hawaii, was diagnosed with a serious gall bladder trouble. She made a trip to Japan and was treated with Reiki by Hayashi Sensei. She recovered completely in four months. She then worked for Hayashi Sensei as a Reiki student for about one year before returning to Hawaii.

Hayashi Sensei visited Mrs. Takata in Hawaii in 1938 and initiated her into Shinpiden (Shihan or Teacher) level. Mrs. Takata set up her Reiki clinic in Hawaii and in her later life, she made 22 Reiki Teachers (so-called Reiki Masters in the West.) Thanks to their devotion, Reiki Ryoho (Reiki hands-on healing art) has become widespread in the West.

NOTE: While Mrs. Takata is not part of the Komyo Lineage, her contribution to Reiki as a whole deserves an honorable mention. In truth, it is because of Mrs. Takata’s great devotion to Reiki and continual hard work and effort that Reiki is known to the world today.
